Mastering First Date Etiquette: Tips from Wake Journey’s Podcast

Dating can be exciting, but it can also feel tricky. This is especially true if you have autism or are neurodiverse. In Episode 1 of the Wake Journey Podcast, we talked about ways to handle first dates. These tips can help you feel more confident and enjoy the experience.

Whether this is your first date ever or you just want to get better at dating, here are some key tips from the episode.

  1. Show Up on Time

Being on time is one of the best ways to make a good first impression. It shows that you respect your date’s time and are serious about getting to know them. If something happens and you’re going to be late, send a text to let them know. Communication is key!

  1. Small Gestures Matter

Simple things, like holding the door or pulling out a chair, show that you’re thoughtful. Compliments, like telling your date they look nice, can also make them feel appreciated. These gestures should feel natural. If they don’t, it’s okay to skip them and focus on being present.

  1. Pay Attention to Body Language

Reading social cues can be tough, but body language can help. Making eye contact shows that you’re paying attention. If your date is smiling and leaning in, it’s a good sign. If they seem closed off, it may mean they’re feeling nervous or unsure. Adjust the conversation if needed.

  1. Ask Open-Ended Questions

One way to keep the conversation going is to ask open-ended questions. Instead of asking, “Do you like your job?” try, “What’s your favorite part of your job?” This helps the conversation flow and lets you learn more about your date.

  1. Listen Actively

Don’t just wait for your turn to speak—really listen to what your date is saying. Nodding and asking follow-up questions shows that you care about their thoughts. This helps make the conversation more meaningful.

  1. Handle Awkward Silences

Everyone faces awkward silences. The key is not to panic. Take a deep breath and smile. You can use the silence as a chance to switch topics, like asking your date about their favorite trip. Silences don’t have to be uncomfortable—they can be a normal part of the conversation.

  1. Compliment Sincerely

Compliments are great, but they should be genuine. One or two compliments during the date are enough. You could say something like, “You look great tonight,” or “I like your smile.” This will help your date feel appreciated.

  1. Handling the Bill

When it’s time to pay, offer to cover the bill if you invited your date. If they want to split, go with it! The key is to be polite and avoid any awkward arguments.

  1. End the Date on a Positive Note

At the end of the date, say something nice to wrap things up. Thank your date for their time and let them know if you enjoyed yourself. If you’d like to see them again, say so! A simple, “I had a great time—let’s do this again soon,” can set the stage for a second date.
